Where is the smell coming from? Engine compartment, under the bed? Do you see fuel spots on the floor? Could be a broken fuel line.

Check the fuel line going to the fuel pressure regulator. It could be slowly leaking in that area. Always be careful when you work with fuel leaks, a small spark can set off dangerous situation.

I checked the fuel pressure regulator hose and didn't find a leak but the gasket under the air cleaner that is between the air cleaner and the carburator is rotten and fell apart. You think that could have something to do with the fuel smell.

Could be. Regardless, the gasket needs to be replaced. While you are at it, double check the carburetor seat gasket for any leaks. Use carburetor to spray clean the are and the carburetor as well to be sure that the leak is not coming from there. If the odor persists, I would have the car checked by a mechanic, fuel leaks are dangerous.
