1995 Dodge ram 1500 318 motor

Just bought a 1995 dodge ram 1500 with a
318. I put a new battery in it but when I turn
the key to start nothing happens. The dome
light comes on the door buzzard dings radio
works but nothing happens when turning the
key to start.
I took the starter out and that does work.
Any ideas would help

Try to start it with the gear selector in neutral check and make sure a 3-prong wire harness on the transmission is plugged in not the 6or 12 wire but the three wire one
