my chevy s10 2003 v6 engine over heat and coolant burst out after check gages light on, how to settle

During driving time , check gages light on and could not drive car. I found the radiator cap was open because of over heat pressure. May I know how to settle the problem?

Sounds like possible compression in the cooling system. Has the cooling system had regular maintenance?
