Won't stay running, has to be jumped off to start then idles and dies?

Asked by Legion985 Dec 18, 2013 at 06:58 PM about the 2000 Chevrolet S-10 LS Extended Cab RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Driving my 2000 Chevy S10 home the battery light came on and when I got home found
it was the alternator. Replaced the alternator and ran fine for 2 weeks. The other day
the battery light came back on but all my other gauges went out even the radio. Got a
friend to give me a jump and it would turn over , idle then to put it in reverse it died.
Tested battery then replaced it. Truck still will not crank without being jumped and even
replaced the the plug on the side of alternator. Not sure what else to try, any help
would be appreciated/?!?!?!

yes...well pull timing cover off and slowly turn the engine until the timing marks are lined up like in the book...ok?

you'll know if the chain is loosey-goosey and has leapt a tooth...also the wear shoe will be out of wear too~ replace these items (if it still runs without interference)~

Also I can drive it a while but it's basically running off the battery. If I'm idle too long it dies.
