Shifter doesn't engage transmission

Asked by hawkemoon53 Oct 27, 2018 at 09:02 PM about the 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier Sedan FWD

I had to change the starter away from home. After driving home I shut it off for
the night. The next morning the engine starts fine, but the shifter will move the
full range of gears,  but won't engage the transmission.
