1998 S10 starts and runs most of the time, other times just cranks.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My S10 will start up perfectly almost everytime on the first or second crank,
but once and a while for no reason it will just keep cranking over with no start.
I wait about ten minutes and it starts back up like there was never a problem.

Could be a fuel issue. I would check the fuel pressure and do a fuel pressure bleed down test. Fuel pressure should be 56 to 63 lbs.. The bleed down test is just turning the key off and watching the fuel pressure gauge. It should not drop more than 5 lbs. in 3 minutes. If so then there are leaking injectors, or fuel regulator. The whole assembly would need replacing.

Could be a partially clogged fuel filter letting you know it is about to be fully clogged.

It turned out to be my crankshaft position sensor. Took about 15 minutes to fix and starts every time now!
