Driver side rear wheel locked up while driving

Asked by Curryism Sep 16, 2018 at 10:34 AM about the 1997 Chevrolet S-10 LS Extended Cab RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I use my s 10 For work I put about 300 miles per week on this vehicle the
other day while driving, my vehicle just turned sideways into a skid into the
oncoming lane thankfully no one was coming then into someone’s yard
across their yard luckily missing the boat and very lucky no one was in the
yard.  I finally came to a stop in a nearby field I called a friend to come pull me
out where we noticed my driver side rear Wheel was locked up,Oddly enough
once we got everything back on pavement the wheel moves freely again what
would cause the wheel to lock up like this?

May be a bad axle bearing or brake locking up. Check drum brake shoes (excess dust buildup) or adjustment on hardware, or wheel cylinder, or even the ebrake.

Ok I’ll look into those things yall are leaning towards the brakes. Prior to incident the wheel would squeak at low speeds but barely tap brakes it would stop. I was convinced it was bearings, but never expected a lock up like that
