Alternator frequent replacement

Asked by Rick May 07, 2018 at 02:47 PM about the 2004 Ford F-150 Lariat Ext. Cab SB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

WE have replaced the alternator about every 3 years.  I that common?  I think
is it related to the sound system with subs and amps that my son added.  Any
thoughts?

thanks. It has always been my suspicion all along that the extra power pull by the higher end audio system and subwoofer was a possible culprit

You can upgrade to a 130 amp alternator. Just make sure you upgrade the main power wire to accommodate the additional load. Keep in mind the alternator will only put about 70 percent of its maximum idle. Caution against sitting at the beach with the engine at idle and the music cranked up to 10.

If 130 amps is not enough, police cruisers routinely come with 225 amp alternators to power all the lights, sirens, radio, computers, etc. If that is not large enough, tell Jr. to get a very long extension cord and plug it in when he drives off.
