F150 Trouble Starting

Asked by Craig Feb 08, 2018 at 11:31 AM about the 2001 Ford F-150 XLT Extended Cab LB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

This is interesting. So, 2 weeks ago my 2001 F150 wouldn't start. I tried to
jump it, twice. No go. But then magically, 1 hour later it started. So I took it to
the shop. They replaced the battery and scrubbed corrosion off of the cables
and connection. So then today, I start the truck, BUT AS I'M PULLING OUT OF
DRIVEWAY IN REVERSE I CAN HEAR A DISTINCT CLICK-CLICK-CLICK
SOUND. It's as if it might be coming from the left of my steering wheel though
I am not certain. I get suspicious. And sure enough, when I stop the truck and
turn it off it won't start again. Nothing. Turn key and nothing happens. No
sounds, nothing. I open the hood, look around, nothing. Try to start it again,
and it fires up. Thoughts?

Do you think the clicking might be a relay in your fuse box, under the dash? Put your hand on it, sometimes you can feel the vibration. Then, what does the relay control? Check out those circuits. If the starter motor won't crank the engine, I usually get at the starter relay or solenoid and do some testing. Any testing, make sure tranny is in park or neutral and parking brake is set.

Just to add, with intermittent issues, you have to test when problem is ongoing.

Thanks for the feedback. I just went outside. It started no problem. I drove it around block. Pulled back into drive way. Turned it off. Then I tried to start it 2 more times in the drive way. It fired up strong both times. Then...........I thought I heard 1 click when engine was on, but it wasn't as distinct as before. But sure enough though, when I turned the engine off, in the drive way, in Park, I could not get it started again. I opened the hood, slammed it back down, tried it again, and magically I was able to start it again just fine.

If it cranks good but won't start, make sure battery has a full charge and connections all good. When problem is ongoing, have helper crank it while you check for spark at the plugs. If spark everywhere, use a gage and check proper fuel pressure and fuel injector pulse. Chasing intermittent issues can be a pain.
