Alternator Charging issue

Asked by g59624 Oct 20, 2017 at 10:51 PM about the 2001 Ford F-150 King Ranch Crew Cab SB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have 2001 Ford F-150, 5.4L, 2wd. While
out running errands I stopped and locked
my truck. I noticed that the hoed was weak
and the headlights where deem. I opened
the door and I hear the "clicking" noise like
when a battery is not charged up. So I got
it jumped off. After about 30 seconds it
died. So, I assumed the alternator was
going out. I took it to the auto parts store
and had it test and then to a different store
to double check. Both said it checked
good so, I put a hot battery in and
reinstalled the alternator. After just a
minute or so, the voltage started dropping
and final back down to where the truck
died. It sure has the symptoms of a faulty
alternator but it checks good. Please
advise if possible.

Are battery terminals & terminal wires corroded (cut open insulation) or frayed. Negative to frame good. Ground from engine to frame good. Did you also test the battery? If may have a bad cell. When it was running this last time did the volt gauge on dash register somewhere near 14+ volts?

Look at this page/site its a 1997 but it should be the same, it has 3 fuses under hood that can effect the charging system 2 near the starter relay and on in-line going from alternator need to check these fuse's. I will post the url below.
