My 98 ford f-150 v6 won't start

Asked by enforce24 Jan 19, 2016 at 05:01 PM about the 1998 Ford F-150 STD Extended Cab SB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I had the smog checked and it passed, while driving it home it started to
loose power and then stopped. Had it towed home, put in new fuel filter,
checked cyl . comp. 1 low cyl. Changed all plugs. ohmed all plug wires,
injectors, sensors. checked timing, it pops and back fires when trying to
start. Fuel press is around 50 lbs but drains off in about 20 sec. to 10 lbs..
If I spray starter fluid in the throttle body it pops and back fires. Changed
timing pickup sensor. Could it be in the computer??? I don't think it jumped
time, but don't know why it back fires.

Well you still have a fuel issue. Fuel pressure bleeding off that fast is definitely a leak in either the injectors, lines running to the injectors or the fuel pressure regulator. It could backfire from this, too much fuel leaking into the cylinders. What size engine is this?

The engine is a 4.1 .. I have checked all sensors and replaced most of them. I just pulled the injectors ad found one bad. Replaced it and put new o-rings around the rest, still cranks ,but does not start.put in a new batt. also.

Don't laugh, but something is definitely wrong. For it to be back-firing even with the starting fluid is telling me that it is in the timing. Timing may have jumped and 1 low cylinder is a good indication of this. Now I was trying to see what timing system you have in there, (chains & set-up) but cannot find a 4.1L engine. Would it be a 4.2L? Also looking for a W in the vin number. But this is does not have anything to do with the fuel issue. Fuel pressure should not bleed off that fast.

If in fact u have the 4.1 that'll be the inline 6 cyl and it has a distributor. check the distributor cap for cracks or wear
