Suggestions for improving 1994 F150 2wd 302/355 gear hp and torque for higher towing capacity.

Asked by GuruYFQ9S Mar 31, 2018 at 02:36 PM about the 1994 Ford F-150 XLT 4WD Extended Cab SB

Question type: General

I bought the truck new and it has only 65,000 miles, always garaged and
never winter driven. The owners manual rates it for 7000 lb towing max.If it
could do the job of towing a 23 to 26 ft travel trailer with some power and
spring mods I would keep it instead of buying a new truck with a much higher
towing spec.

Clearly weight is paramount so pick a light trailer and allow for the water and gear you stow inside. That large of a trailer will be stressing your engine and transmission. You could install lower gears in the differentials and beef up the engine and transmission cooling. A weight distributing hitch and heavier rear springs would also be a good idea. A performance exhaust will help a little but the best thing would be a larger engine such as a 351 or a big block.

Thanks for that. It has cat back dual exhaust and a K & N air filter, along with a performance chip. I chucked the stock shocks when the truck was new and installed heavier ones all around. I intend to add a trans cooler and add to the rear leaf springs. I am also considering going to a 3:73 rear gear to give it more low end. I know a 302 is small on the cubes, which limits torque output even if I improved the breathing with a bettet camshaft.
