Truck won't stay running after battery charge

Asked by AustinYatesF150 Jun 19, 2017 at 04:57 PM about the 1993 Ford F-150 XLT 4WD LB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 93 f150 xlt 4x4. I left my
headlights on for about 2 hrs and it
drained my battery. I gotta jump and
drove it home (roughly 15 min drive)
when I pulled in I shut it off and tried to
start it but still acted as if it was a dead
battery. The next day I hooked my
wife's car up to it with the jumper
cables for about 20 min to charge the
battery, got it to start and let it run for
awhile but after about 10-15 min it
started to idle rough and died. My
battery gauge shows its not even half
charged. Could it be my alternator
going out or do I need to put it on a
trickle charge?

The alternator should keep the truck running if it were working. I suspect you have failed alternator and battery. A low or weak battery can put enough strain on a worn out alternator to kill it. Same with a marginal battery. The battery may have been weak and draining it may have been enough to cause cell failure.
