How often does shift cable go on 2003 chevy cavailer?

Transmission was fine went in store came out car would not go in any gear,was told the shiftcable clamp broke,how often does this happen and can it happen that way?

sure anything can break. not as common, but can happen...stop either forcing it in gear, or changing gears while car is rolling, as in drive to reverse, or reverse to drive while car is moving...those are the common reasons it fails...depending where it broke....

my 1989 buick Rivi lasted 188k miles on the stock shift cable. it is nylon and it does get hot in the engine bay. mine was used gently.. it did not get daily use. my other cars are too new to tell how durable they are.
