Cold mornings or nights, starter sounds like it is trying to stay engaged

Might be the grease on the pinion gear gets too thick when cold, or the tolerances on the starter/flex plate are too close when it's cold, shimming the starter might let the pinion slide back easier, or it might be time to replace the starter.
