Making a long trip... Advice?

Asked by Melody Dec 30, 2018 at 02:29 PM about the 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer LT 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My vehicle runs super well. Very quiet. You can't
even hear or feel the engine (unless you really
focus on it,) when idling or stopped until you press
the gas.

This truck has 123,000 miles on it at the time I post
this, good brakes, good tires, and has never, with
myself or previous owners been more than 200
miles past due for an oil change, save for once last
year, but still less than 500.

This is and has been a solid truck, but as I'm
considering moving, I need to take a trip to see
how it handles the drive.

I'll be going from central Wyoming to Houston in
the summer. This truck has never been south of
Denver, apparently. But I don't think it will have any
issues with elevation after it adjusts.

However, I'm fully aware this is an older vehicle,
probably with more miles than it should have by
this point. It's well cared for, and runs like a dream,
so, I'd like to keep it that way.

What are some tips I could get on this? What else
should I check beyond fluids when I'm stopped
along the way?
I have people in both states who are good with
vehicles, if it needs oil changes, but should I stop in
between if I hit the next change mark?  Should I get
an oil change just before I go, even if early? Should
I not sweat it, from point A to point B, as long as
the vehicle runs and sounds fine?

I'll admit this is sort of my mechanical baby, but I
don't know too much about vehicles. Any tips are
appreciated greatly.

Tune up, fresh oil change, clean or replace all filters, and since you are going to be traveling through Denver, make sure to clean the MAF sensor (with MAF cleaner only), clean or replace the PCV. That will help the engine computer determine proper air/fuel mix which gets critical at higher elevations. A lot of vehicles wimp out at those elevations FYI. Inspect brakes, suspension, tires and top off on all fluids.

Just to add: if you're last oil change wasn't that long ago, say under 1,000 miles, then you can skip changing it now until after your trip. If you do decide to change the oil, do it some days or a week before your trip so you know there is no problem with the filter or its installation.

Thank you, Ken! I'll be going from around 7,000 feet to sea level, then back up. So I'll definitely look into the MAF cleaning.

Hi Melody, you're good to go, our platform's I6 motor is very good, though it sucks the gas down. 123k miles is barely broken in! Many of us have between 220-300k easy on these engines. To improve your gas mileage and performance on this trip, I'd recommend removing your throttle body and clean both sides with a sensor safe spray like Seafoam. (remove fuses #10 and #28 under the hood prior to cleaning). Since we do not have a PCV valve, our throttle bodies become dirty quickly, should be cleaned at least once a year.

P.S. along with Ken's good suggestion of cleaning the MAF, (I cleaned mine yesterday), use MAF spray cleaner specifically for MAF's. Just 2 screws, very simple, just spray, air dry and you're good, don't scrub, these are very sensitive. The Throttle body for our engine has MANY how to's on the "TUBE" for our vehicle specifically. You can do it yourself with simple hand tools. BTW, when I go to buy another Trailblazer, I will be looking for one with around 120-150k miles on it. Let that sink in.

FJ4072, glad to know I'm on a stable platform. And I'll be definitely making notes of all the things suggested. I really love my Trailblazer!
