Why would it do this?

My hubby drove our 2003 Toyota Corolla to work and when
he went to leave it started up fine and then wouldn't
engage into any gear (it's an automatic) 150,000 miles or
so.

Low transmission fluid due to a leak, something internal failed in the transmission?
