Car starts and idles fine but does not respond well to throttle

Asked by GuruYYM4F Feb 25, 2018 at 06:43 PM about the 2001 Toyota Avalon XL

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2001 toyota avalon starts fine.  It idles
fine.  But when i put it in gear and try to go it
barely goes and putt-putts.  Also while it is in
park if i press the throttle it will not rev past
2500 rpms until it is warm and even then it
still just putt-putts when i try to drive it.  Also
the lights inside and outside flicker or pulse.
What is wrong with this car?  Help me
please?

I have a 2000 Avalon, which is same from 2000 to 2004. Had same problem. It accelerated wildly but not past 2500. When I stated it, it blew a cloud of smoke, meaning there was oil in the combustion chamber. This problem had happened long before the rpm issue for about 2 years. When it started not revving, I changed the POV valve and the revving recovered SOMETIMES, and then it got bad again. I had bought a pcv valve from non dealer, but I used new valve and old grommet, and there was a little play. BUT ALL THIS IS GONE, AND THIS IS HOW: I bought an original pcv valve and grommet from Toyota and replaced. I opened the valve cover and discovered some sludge covering the holes that go to the pcv valve. I cleaned that thoroughly. I also noticed my vvt solenoids were stuck somewhat, because of the sludge (the previous owner who is a relative is not careful with cars). I bought new ones—den so are the original, but A1 auto parts are close enough. I change both (one on each bank. I also changed the spart plugs because one of them had gunk (oil) on it, which explains there was too much pressure in the engine because of the blockages. Then I put everything together. Problem solved. No rev problem. No smoke. Idles perfectly. Drives like a dream. 269000 miles. I am not a mechanic. I grew up in Africa with only a wheelbarrow. Americans have inspired me dare. I have. You can
