How to lock car with spare Smart Key inside of car?

Asked by kiscoirish Apr 24, 2011 at 07:11 PM about the 2005 Toyota Prius FWD

Question type: General

If I leave the Smart Key in the car I cannot lock the doors and this is a good thing. However, when I travel I like to take along a spare key in my suitcase. How can I "inactivate" the spare key but not the active key so that if I stop before I reach my destination and remove the suitcase with the spare key from my car I can still lock the car?

Remove the battery from the spare key and place both the key and the battery in a zip lock bag in your suitcase.

Just use the remote button on your remote key, you can lock the car with the spare key inside the car. You will have to unlock the car by pushing the button again. So touch the car door is not going to unlock the door at this point.

I know this thread is dead, but I had the same issue and found that a small tin (I had an empty Eclipse mints tin) can block the signal. Taking the batteries out is a pain.

Wrapping in several layers of aluminum foil will also work.

The "small tin" answer by atds89(above) is the best, IMO. Used to use aluminum foil to wrap up the key since it becomes a Faraday shield. But it's a little messy to keep around and might get tossed by someone else accidentally.
