Considering buying a 1998 Subaru Legacy - Less than 200k miles

Asked by anekimrae Apr 24, 2018 at 10:13 PM about the 1998 Subaru Legacy L Wagon AWD

Question type: Shopping & Pricing

I want your opinion. I love subarus. I want a subaru. My chevy aveo just sh*t
the bed and I'm shopping around for a new car in my price range. I don't have
a ton of money to spend and a subaru in really great shape isn't exactly cheap.
I found this beater '98 legacy on Craigslist from this kid who's the second
owner and the first was an old lady - both have thoroughly maintained the car.
It doesn't seem to have any mechanical issues, just isn't very pretty to look at,
but everything works. I'm taking it to my mechanic on Thursday morning.
When I spoke to him on the phone he said the miles were high for an old car
but from so much of what I've read, these cars just don't quit. The kid said he
just wants it to go to a good home and is asking 1300 OBO, told me he just
wants to get *some* money for it. I think I could easily offer him 1000.

What do you think?

Have it checked for leaking head gaskets and get it as cheap as possible.

My mechanic said it was in better shape than he expected but he suggested that i keep looking, i guess just cause its an old car. I still feel drawn to it for some reason though! He said within the next 10,000 miles the timing belt would need to be taken care of and that it needs a power steering hose ASAP. Those are the only known problems. I guess i could just keep looking but part of me wonders if i got it really cheap if it will end up actually being a good decision
