98 Subaru Legacy wagon- faint smoke & burning smell

Asked by Yikesplzhelpme Oct 14, 2019 at 02:41 PM about the 1998 Subaru Legacy L Wagon AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I purchased a 1998 Subaru Legacy L wagon
a few days ago. Test drove on the highway
and on city streets, drove well and everything
looked good so I bought it. Dude told me the
car had a small oil leak. It drives perfectly fine
and there are no lights on, temp gauge looks
good during driving. I’m noticing now the car
kinda smells like burning (oil?) after driving it
and a very small amount of smoke is coming
from the passenger side under the hood. My
dad said he thinks the oil may be leaking on
the manifold and the smoke I’m seeing is
from the oil burning. Does anyone have
experience with this issue, know what the
problem might be? Is it gonna be expensive
to fix? I’m a 21 yo college student across the
country from my pops so any tips greatly
appreciated! TIA :-)

Yes, probably seeping from the right (pass) valve cover gasket. If you're looking at a very warm winter you can switch to 20w50 summer oil to quench the seepage a lot, or at least 10w40 in colder climes. Just stay away from 0 or 5w if you're peeing it out. You could have seepage from the rear main seal, which can be quenched by adding a bottle of seal conditioner to the oil, but this won't work on the valve cover seepage. Sometimes oil pump o-rings crack up front, too, but that means you might as well perform a full t-belt job ($), so forget it unless you're actually dripping thicker oil later on. Best, Ern TSG/B

Check the oil controll valve. It is right above the exhaust and it leaks on top of it giving that smell. Or could be head gasket?
