What are some things I should check before I replace the engine

I have a 2006 Chevy Cobalt it was running great the
other day I started it and it sounds like it is
struggling to run loss of power but motor does not
make any noise what should I check first

Maybe it just needs a tuneup and filter change.

Check the compression which is a way of evaluating an engine.

The very first thing you should do is scan it for trouble codes. It sounds to me like its running in reduced power mode.
