Car keeps dying.

Asked by mailcarrier Oct 17, 2010 at 09:52 AM about the 1993 Subaru Legacy L Wagon AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1993 subaru lagacy with over 200,000 miles on it that I use to deliver mail. A few weeks back it started acting like it didn't want to shift out of first than would lurch into 2nd and then back down again. Along with this it would rattle and sputter and then die. It would start right up, go a bit, than do the same thing. Finally it would start then die emediatly. I had it towed to my mechanic. When he checked it out a few days later it ran perfectly and he couldn't find anything wrong. So I got it back and it ran for about 5 days wouthout any problems then it started the same thing again. Any ideas about what could be going on? It is a right hand drive and I've already put a lot of money into it. I'd hat to have to trash it.

dougskeens you need a new alternator. As far as mailcarrier's issue I would agree with papa, sounds like the issue's in the tranny.

i would start with a good transmission fluid service. Do you have a service engine light? sounds like you may have a catalytic converter/mass airflow meter issue with the stalling. These are also signs of transmission/torque converter issues. Take it to a Subaru specialist.
