Need Car To Pass Smog

Asked by Coco87 Apr 30, 2020 at 01:42 AM about the 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix Base

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix , smog place suggested
that I change the fuel filter I've searched this website and
YouTube it says the fuel filter is located in front of driver
side back tire when I checked with autozone for the fuel
filter a picture and the part pops up but when I went in the
store I was told the fuel filter is all in one with the fuel pump
so It did not give them the option for a fuel filter by itself so
what I thought would cost me approximately $12.99 has
has turned in $500 plus dollars so is it true that I cannot
buy just the fuel filter? Because according to the internet I
can and the job looks like it take all of 20 mins. Thank You
in advance

I have no experience with your vehicle but while it is true that your fuel pump is in your tank, the fuel filter is typically in the fuel line between the tank and the engine. Follow the fuel line out of the tank along the side of your car. You will run into a canister about 2 inches in diameter and 6 inches long that has a fitting on both ends (one in and one out). That is your fuel filter. Good luck.

I rather doubt the fuel filter is the problem. What exactly is the reason it fails inspection?

I see no listings for just the fuel filter for a 2006 Grand Prix. I checked all engine options. The YouTube video was probably showing an older model. A fuel filter is available for my 2000 model, for example. Don't waste your time or money replacing the fuel pump! Why won't the vehicle pass inspection? Check engine light on? Readiness monitors not set? If the check engine light is on have your local auto parts store scan the computer for trouble codes. Get the codes and post them here. We can help further. If your readiness monitors are not set simply drive normally for a few days with the gas gauge between three quarters and one quarter full. The readiness monitors will then set. Also remember that under Federal Law your vehicle will pass Emissions inspection with one readiness monitor not set. It doesn't matter what one is not set as long as all the other ones are set. Hope that helps! Jim
