04 Grand Prix window problem

Asked by Josh Aug 21, 2017 at 01:36 PM about the 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix GT1

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2004 Grand Prix, and recently the windows have started to not roll
up or down correctly, but the problem is strangely inconsistent.

The front passenger window is stuck completely down; the driver's side
switch won't operate the window at all, and the switch on the passenger's
side door will move the window down, but not up.

I swapped the switch on the passenger's side out with another switch that I
knew worked fine and got the same result, and the switch from the
passenger door worked fine in another door. Replaced the motor, didn't fix
the problem.

The driver's side rear window has the same problem (driver's panel won't
move the window at all).

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

The regulators do like to break. Seems odd that it's in multiple doors at the same time though.

I believe all power for the windows run through the driver window controls first then run out to the other windows. so if all windows are having issues that might be the place to start. I have had similar issues my 05 gt and simply cleaning all the contacts where the harness plugs into the switches fixed it.

Does it try to go up or is it just dead. The window regulators can break so when the motor tries to move the window it can't. The motor itself can burn out although that is much less common. Could also be the switch itself. I rebuilt one of mine by borrowing parts from one of the back door switches. And of course there's lots of wiring that can possibly get pinched somewhere or come loose. Do some trouble shooting (or have someone do it for you) and find the problem before you start spending money on the wrong parts for an old car.
