I have a 2001 pontiac grand prix gtp supercharged. My problem first starts
with it not shifting out of 2nd gear. i diconnected the battery for a few hours
and then it would drive right for about a week then it would do it again. then
my low trac light would come on and as im driving it would all of sudden be
like as if i hit the brakes when i didnt. ive already changed the abs censor
before this started happening. my problem now is when i turn the car on and
put it in 1st gear it says im in 2nd gear on my dashboard but its not in 1st
gear in the first place its in 2nd when i put it in drive it doesnt show im in any
gear on my dash. now when im driving it slips out of gear completely and
until i turn the car off and restart it it wont go into any gear not even reverse.
the rpms run high and it shows its running hot even tho there are fluids in
it..what could be causing all of this ive already put about 2 grand in it fixing
and replacing stuff and cant afford much more i love the car but im strongly
considering selling. what could be causing these problems?

I had a grand prix for years so I have witnessed your frustrations first hand with these cars. Your issue could be several things. First it could be as simple as poor terminal or connector fittings. Also it could be a bad solenoid in the tranny itself. Since you mention the abs and having replaced sensors before im leaning towards a loose dirty or corroded connector somewhere going to the pcm.

I have checked all connections and there is no corrosion or loose connection to pcm. I was told something about a pinon top of the transmission..?? not sure on that. I'm a woman and I'm somewhat mechanically inclined but I know nothing about this particular car. Please tell me step by step if u can. I really appreciate the help
