If your mechanic checked it 8 times and is unable to determine the location of where the smell/source is... then you should take it to another mechanic for a second opinion. I had a smell coming from my dashboard too but it wasn't a burning smell. It was more of a sweet smell which would give me headaches after a few minutes. I found out it was my heater core leaking anti-freeze into the car. Had it replaced but the smell remained for weeks. Definitely find the source of that smell because you might me doing harm to yourself in the long run.
