distributor removed and reinstalled cannot start

Did you forget to mark what position it was originally installed in? Or maybe put the spark plugs back on in the wrong order? The only thing I can think of if you did both of those is to turn the engine to TDC then set the distributor to fire the #1 cylinder and make sure it stays there when you're re-installing it.
