How hard would it be for a
complete amateur to change
the water pump?

A water pump replacement will be pretty straight forward on that vehicle. As long as you have the correct tools and a basic mechanical knowledge. If you're going to attempt this job yourself, I would recommend to take plenty of pictures of the breakdown process and watch a few vids on basic water pump replacements. Make sure you have a phone a friend on standby in the case you need a hand. Good luck.
