Question type: Maintenance & Repair

cruiser cranks and cranks but it does not turn over and start. I do not smell fuel at all during this process. could it be anything but the fuel pump. Also, could a diagnostic test tell me the answer?

at the fuel rail you could check for pressure at the shroeder valve there...first off when you put the key into the "on" position, do you hear the fuel rail energizing? the shroeder valve looks like a tire valve and will spray at 90 PSI if you activate it~ we will know the fuel pump is working then~

I'm going to go ahead and declare the ignition system is at fault~...because the fuel would have been combusted....but there ain't no spark...so test for +12 volts DC at the coil pack(S) and see if we are powering the high voltage?...if not going to have to have you check the ignition relay (If equipped) and/or ignition fuse or the ignition switch...test for +12 volts where you think it should be energized~

the ignition switch seems like a complicated little bugger~ this one may be at fault if tested as such~

the six points of advice is going to be checked. it is very apparent that you know your stuff and are a research extraordinaire. I feel I am now going into battle armed and ready. I love these cruisers but did not know they where this complicated. thanks Roy, I also have resources in several areas and you just go ahead and post if you need anything.

I have an 04 pt cruiser 2.4L 162,000< miles we have replaced the timing belt already. been having problems currently as to it won't stay started. Cranks up sometimes even turns over but never more than a few seconds then shuts off. Tested and checked all possible options. We have spark and fuel and compression but still will not run any suggestions?

I would check the codes with a code tester and go from there. It may be possible you have a bad airflow sensor or a bad coil pack.

Replace throttle sensor there exspensive could be the fix it worked for my pt crusier . It would start up and i would have to use gas pedal to keep it running good luck out or follow the experts recommendation they generally know what talkin about. Tk

We got that problem before..."Start then Stop" with our PT Cruiser, it was the programmable key...does not get aligned w/ car's computer code. This was made from a local dealer, charged us a ridiculous $90 amount, and that key was the problem. So that same key, we got it duplicated and programmed at the local Key & Lock Shop, paid $30...that solved the Starting then Stop...problem for us. We use the Dealer made key as a spare now.
