2006 Honda Civic

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My son's 2006 Civic had a
coolant leak. Took it in
thinking worse case
scenario it would be the
radiator.  Unfortunately we
found out it has a cracked
engine block. Come to find
out there was a recall on
2006-2009 models due to
this problem. However, they
were only covered 10 years
after the original purchase
date. We bought ours in
2015 and were told nothing
about this issue. We are
now 2 years past the recall
repair deadline. My question
is, other than replacing the
engine, is there any other
option? I can't afford to do
that and can't afford to get a
different car. So, what are
my options that won't break
me? I know I'm grasping at
straws here.

If the manufacturer failed to notify you of the recall, I think the legal implications (loss) falls on them. An engine replacement could run $5000 so I would consult a lawyer on this one. You may also contact the Honda district office first and see if they would like to put their denial in writing. If this could be considered a safety issue, contact the Federal Highway Traffic Safety Administration. That will get Honda's attention.

Thank you. I am going to go to the Honda dealership and see what they can do. I've heard that sometimes you can get a good will repair approved. Fingers crossed.

Stupid question...... can you put an accord engine in a civic? I have a friend with one.

There was a brief window of opportunity 2015-2016 when they could have notified you while the recall was in effect, and your were the registered owner, but they failed to do so. If they are smart, they will keep you happy and the lawyers out of it because you could trigger a class action suit costing them a ton of cash. Right now, keeping you happy will cost them only $5000 and that's pocket change for Honda. Good Luck
