2002 Taurus, brittle hose under hood broke. What is it?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2002 Taurus, kind of a beater.  A small, brittle hose broke under
the hood today when I was checking out the washer fluid line, probably b/c
it's old.  I bumped it and it snapped clean.  I can feel vacuum pulling
through  the right side (i think...). I had to get home, and the car drove fine.
I've circled the broken line in the picture.  Can anyone tell me what this
hose does?  It looks like I could replace it, if I knew what it was and if it was
crucial.  Thanks!

Repair is possible with a small diameter piece of vacuum hose. The areas that are brittle may continue to break as you handle them. It breaks because of temperatures under the hood, exposure to the atmosphere, and time. Thirteen years ? Yeah, I would say maintainingthe car properly would include vacuum lines be maintained. What does it connect to? You can map it out using the underhood sticker, the CAFE regulation sticker for tune-up. It includes a color vacuum hose routing diagram... on every car since the early seventies or there about. Lines with repeat issues cab be protected with sleeves. or if you want to create something? reynolds wrap ? it is like the reflective insulation sleeve material, but costs cents instead of tens of dollars.
