1993 Taurus sho fuel pump

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

At times it will crank and not start but will start
after sitting for a few hours. The fuel pump is wired
directly to the battery through a switch. Is the fuel
pump going out or could it be a lack of a relay ?

This could be the signs of a failing fuel pump but depending on the pump it probably has a screen/filter to keep the sediment out of the pump and out of the fuel system..when the car sits for a while either the sediment falls out of the screen or the pump is beginning to wear out and it's simply cooling down...also do u or has someone continually ran/run the tank low or out of gas regularly? As a youngster I was constantly getting bit###d out for running my car on fumes...and that's why it's very bad on the fuel pump to suck sediment and rust in the pump..also if it runs dry the fuel pump has no fuel to lubricate itself...but...this is just my two cents!!

Good input Tiegz79! I would also be concerned about that hodge podge fuel pump switch, that's a fire waiting to happen. I assume that was someone's fix for a bad ignition switch.

Thanks kenf i never thought of that I would hope that an inline fuse would be used for this that's definitely a fire extinguishers dream come true! But electrical isn't a strong point for me..I have gotten a lot better after owning a couple Passats;!
