The 5.3 came with the 4L60 Transmission. There were 3 gearsets that the truck could have come with 4:10, 3:73 or 3:42. There are many things that can be done to increase mileage/performance. Cold air induction kit, free flowing exhaust, Performance tuning. Or go all in and supercharge it.

the 5.3 came from the factory making 300hp. I have pulled 5.3's from donor trucks and turboed them to over 600hp with stock internals. But they dont last long at those levels. But they are cheap. You can determine your gear ratio by running the rpo codes found in the glove box, or simply going to the chevy dealer with the VIN.# and asking them to decode it. You will get a list of everything that was installed in your truck at the factory. Keep in mind if you have a 4wd truck you will have to replace both front and rear gearsets at the same time if you change ratios. As for what you can do while waiting for the supercharger install. Start getting it ready to take advantage of the S/C. Headers, a quality set. free flowing exhaust system. Cold air intake kit. A programmer will come with the S/C so I wouldn't buy one just yet, or choose a kit that allows you to delete a tuner from the sale price of the S/C.
