Loud Screeching sound in middle of the engine.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hi.  In park with engine running I heard a "click" and then a loud screeching pig sound.  The sound is coming from the middle of the engine lower.   I also filled the coolant up and now the light says "low coolant."  I don't see any leaks or smell anything.  Temperature running great.   I'm thinking it's the water pump as it's never been changed out yet, still original one from 1988 with 36,000 miles.   Need some help!

It's an automatic.. Had the rack and pinion just replaced, complete new air conditioner with new compressor and it's not coming from the compressor, new thermostat, radiator, new tensioner with new serpentine belt not coming from that, new starter and new radiator and rebuilt transmission, new CAT back system, all within the last 2 years... Everything was running great, and this just started.. I'm just doing the process of elimination with the low coolant light coming on when I just filled it up and this click sound and squeeling loud sound...

Check your harmonic balancer. The rubber centers tend to deteriorate over time and fail. Hope this helps!

Check your harmonic balancer. The rubber centers tend to deteriorate over time and fail. Look down to see if it is wobbling while the engine is running. Hope this helps!

There is a small hole at the bottom of the water pump that will leak if it has gaskets going bad. It will be damp to the touch. (cool engine so you will not burn your fingers). You also could have a bearing going out. See if you can better locate the "squeal" to look there. If you are indeed losing coolant, the water pump is a good guess. It also could be a belt slipping on a pulley that is starting to freeze up. That is why it is critical to find the source before starting expensive replacements. Keep an eye on the coolant level in the meantime.
