I have 156,000 on my RX300. Need 6,000 work. Should I keep it?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hearing folks say the transmission goes out about 150,000. Hear anything about that?
Would do repairs if not true.

If you like it keep it and get it repaired. I assume the transmission is the problem. If so, do some shopping around for repair prices at the Dealership and transmission shops.

Good information Bob. There is NO truth in the transmission in a Lexus will 'go out' at 150k. You heard wrong. On the contrary, they can last much longer. You might consider a drain and fill on the transmission, but unless the fluid is dark and/or has a burnt odor NO flush

What is the $6k work? If not transmission, by drain and fill I mean drop pan and clean filter screen And if it has not already been done be sure to change timing belt and water pump

I have 195,000 on mine and although everything is in working order I am faced with the same dilemma. Should I put $5,000 into the car or get a new one. I love my car so guess I'll put the money into it.

You can buy an RX300 with a lot fewer miles than that for a lot less than 5 grand. I did and there is no way I would drop more than a few hundred into it.

I’m looking at a 2000 Lexus RX300. Has 156k on it. They’re asking $2600. Private party. Seller is in Pittsburgh, I’m in Columbus Ohio. It would have to pass inspection in Ohio. What should I be concerned about? Thanks
