Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have  a 2002 Toyota Camry and recently it has not been
wanting to start ....I have to pump the gas to keep it
crunk..now not only that when I turn my air on the car
seems to be pulling alot but when I turn the air off it's fine
meaning my mechanic checked the alternator while my air
was running and it was at like a 11 but when I turned the air
off it jump to like a 13...besides all this there is a funny
smell when I get in my car coming through my vents some
kind of chemical smell....so he went from it being my
alternator to my gas pump....what is it

sounds like the iac valve , the alt should be putting out 14+ volts when running , if the smell was gas I'd think it was fuel related but it's not , maybe find another mechanic maybe

What exactly is a iac and is it expensive......and not to mention he said it might be the air compressor....

iac is idle air control , you can test it if you want but the symptoms sound like a bad one , it could be many things that's why things are tested so you don't spend $$ needlessly
