when you are slowing down to a stop, and the car shifts into first gear, this is absolutely normal. Mercedes do it, as do jaguar, bmw, fiat, and even some new chevys and fords. it helps the car stop. Also, about your D+ or D-, if you aren't at a speed or rpm level high or low enough, that feature will not work. it is more or less you giving the car a suggestion to change gears, and the cars computer figures out if it is possible to shift, and if it is, then it will, otherwise it wont change gears. when you use that feature, it is designed to be shifted as you would shift a manual transmission.
