Asked by Jon Sep 30, 2013 at 09:13 PM about the Chevrolet Chevelle

Question type: General

Just bought a 55 chevy, but I can't see the casting numbers on back ( to close to the fire
wall ). On the front of the motor reads.  T0329EG6K1780509 . He said it was a 396.

From my notes here we go --- "T" means it was constructed in Tonawanda "03" means March "29" means the 29th day of the month "EG" means it is a 396/375HP originally with a manual transmission and constructed as Special High Performance. "6" means it was built in 1966 "K1" sorry no help from me "7" was the designation for Chevelle body style in 1966 "80509" is it's number in the assembly line and the last six of the original VIN number. Hope this helps

chevymania.com shows EG block suffix code as an L-78 396/375 from a four speed 66-68 chevelle - I would think the '6' in the EG6 would lean toward 1966 - Tonowanda March 29 and two letter codes were common before 1969-70
