Transmission and overheating

My 86 monte carlo makes a loud
whining sound then my transmission
wont go in gear and it starts to over
heat.

The overheating might be causing the transmission to get too hot and not shift. You want to find the reason for the loud noise first, then fix the overheating problem. Noises can't be easily diagnosed over the internet. Have someone near you help you.
