Can I replace the engine and Tranny in a 2004 forester with 315,00 miles with a Newly 15,000 miles completly rebuilt 2001 engine and tranny

Asked by GuruGC6W May 27, 2017 at 10:51 AM about the Subaru Forester

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I bought the 2004 for the engine to rebuild, but I have a 2001 engine I completely rebuilt with 15,000 miles, all new sensors also.
Will I have any emission problems, can I use the 2004 sensors if needed.
if ok, I will replace all struts, brakes ect also.

im no subaru guy but they both have the same displacement (2.5L) very likely could be the same engine. so i think it should work but, subaru isn't my specialty.

As long as you match the egr or bypass if necessary and the engine is sohc for both engines you'll be fine. Check out opposedforces for engine and trans codes and what range is allowable but 99% sure you're fine with both. Could also check the gearing for the trans ... I've never researched gearing differences for sg foresters but it might save you a headache? Hth
