I have a 98 lumina when I turn the key every thing comes on ,but the starter will not engage. When I jump the starter poles it starts but dies right after

First get your charging system checkout out. Most auto parts stores will do this for free. You might also want to look at your starter relay. A voltage drop test will confirm if you are getting full voltage to the starter, and don't have a bad battery cable or terminals. Dying right after starting may be a symptom of a different problem that has nothing to do with the trouble with cranking. It needs to be looked at by a mechanic or someone experienced with working on cars.
