If the check engine light is on should have the vehicle scanned for trouble codes. It could be caused by the EGR Valve. It is also could be possible Throttle Positioning Sensor on the throttle body. If there is something wrong with the EGR Valve, it would show up in a code.

How are you doing on this? Having the exhaust pipe turn cherry red is not good. You sure there is no obstruction in the exhaust like a rag from working on it or a squirrel or mice nest? Another thing is the timing. If it is way advanced it would turn the pipes red hot. Are you sure the engine timing, camshaft gear and crankshaft gear marks where lined up properly? You should investigate the timing to make sure it is set correctly.
