Hay I just put together a 1973 cutlass rebuild
motor which I don't know much about who did it .it
seems to run good at idle but when you drive it
down the road it has a accelerator ting bad no
power ?350 4 barrel I put the timing gun on it and it
is on the marks.

Pre-ignition.. A common battle with the Olds engines. I always ran 93-94 octane fuel with an octane booster to slow the burn. As mentioned above, check the vacuum advance on the distributor and the mechanical mechanism. Verify all vacuum lines are good, no cracks or splits. I would acquire a vacuum diagram to double check routing is correct.

But before doing any of that make sure the ignition wires are on correctly. If a couple of them are reversed, the engine will run, sort of, but under load it starts to stumble and has no power. It's easy to mix them up when putting things back together. Seen it a million times.
