What's it mean if my 1986 Mercury cougar 3.8 V6 shut off while I was going down the road and now it will crank but won't start

Could be many things. You need to determine if it has spark, properly timed compression and fuel. If you are missing any one of those it will not run.

are you out of gas? have you hit a bump, pot hole or curb ? there is a emergency fuel cutoff reset switch located in the trunk also make sure you are getting fuel under the hood, look for something looks like air valve if it has black cap remove and test pressure by pushing pin in center of it with paper clip if getting gas there the fuel pump is working when key is on and pushed check gauges also make sure you have oil water so it dont over heat and die out on you again good luck
