I have a 1976 vw. When you turn the ignition on it sounds like a very loud fuel pump running noise, Any idea whats going on

theres a very loud pumping noise coming from front of car. what do you think it is.

The fuel tank is there and is the electric fuel pump. Is it running fine or does it need work.
