What is a KARMANN Edition Beetle?

I am familiar with Karmann Ghias. My question is about our 1972 VW Beetle we just bought. Is the Karmann edition something like an Eddie Bauer Edition Ford Explorer, just a marketing gimmick?

For more than a century, they have undertaken various roles, from design to production and assembly of components, for various automobile manufacturers; including Chrysler, Porsche and Volkswagen Group. It apparently was built there, as VW has manufacturing plants all over the world

I have a 1968 karmann beetle convertible. Is this rarer than a "standard" VW convertible?

It appears that nobody knows the answer to the question. I want to know myself. What is the significance of the Karmann designation?
