The engine won't start

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I put the key in to start my engine, I turn it partially.  I see all the dash lights
come on including a hazard light on the left hand side.  I turn it to start the
engine and I can hear a single clicking noise and the engine doesn't turn over.
I open the bonnet and I can hear a whirring type noise while the key remains in
this position.

Will it start with a jump? Battery, starter, bad connections are things to check.

I am not sure, I will have to give that a go first thing in the morning. This photo is the part that is making a noise.

What do you mean first thing in the AM? The sun is up here! Anyway can you get a brighter picture?

Ok, I don't think that has anything to do with your problem, but it is a clue. I do believe your battery is run down, older battery? I would try and get a jump, If and when it starts I would get the battery checked, also the charging system to insure that it is charging. If you can get to the battery you can take the cables off and clean the connections to insure this is not the problem. What time is it there? Almost 9:00 am here in the U.S.A eastern time.

It is midnight in Queensland here. My husband went to start night shift and had to take his utility instead. Thanks for your help.

By the way, the battery was replaced about two years ago, maybe more. So that could be the issue.

If you can get a hold of a battery charger, I would try that to get it going but make sure the battery connections are clean and tight. I put the charger on high for and hr. or two, then on trickle charge for as long as you can leave it on. Trickle charge won't hurt the battery if it still good. But you have to give it boost for a bit.(charger on high) You also want to make sure the serpentine belt is in good shape and tight around the pulleys. Good luck...
