1973 ford f350. suddenly dies after driving freeway/prolonged time

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

73 ford f350. 390 motor. aftermarket headers.
so while driving down the freeway or for prolonged periods the truck will
suddenly die. doesn't sputter or shake just shuts off completely and will not
turn back on until the engine compartment has cooled. I'm not sure if this is a
common issue or just a bad distributor.   when it shuts off there is no power
to anything in the cab. acts like its dead battery. then when its cooler it will
fire up and go on its way. can't tell if I need a heat shield around the
distributor because of the headers or if its the distributor or relay getting
overheated. any heal is appreciated.

My truck would start up and run great, But within a few miles, it would start surging then die. Turned out, It had a clogged hidden fuel filter in a black canister that didn't look like it unscrewed or there would be a fuel filter inside, After changing this fuel filter, it solved this problem.

I would install a new set of points and condensor. A new coil would also be a good idea. A whole new electronic distributor with high energy coil should make your truck run better.
