Why wont my 1985 impala shift once transmission is warm ?

Is it low on transmission fluid? If so fill to proper level then look for the leak. Fluid should be red like cherry kool-aid not brown or black and smell burnt. If its full but smells burnt its probably time to rebuild/replace the transmission.
